Emergency Medical Dispatcher

The Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) is now clearly recognized as an essential component of effective EMS systems. Proper and timely training, continuing education, and sound medical protocol help EMDs deliver quality care to the public before anyone else can.

This course provides the basic and advanced concepts that promote a safe, effective, and professional EMD program. The course was originally developed by Jeff Clawson, M.D., and is certified by the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch (NAEMD).

Over the past decade, NAEMD Certification Courses have become the standard for EMD training. This course meets or exceeds all national criteria set by the American Society for Testing and Materials., the U.S. Department of Transportation, the National Association of EMS Physicians, the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and others.

  • CPR Level C
  • Ability to read and write at a high-school graduate level (or equivalent)

Our instructors are fully trained in a variety of teaching methods using lecture, discussion, video segments, audio tape review, slides, overheads, hands-on practice, and role playing. This offers the participants 24 hours of course experience with many opportunities to learn and practice.

The EMD Certification Course includes a NAEMD-approved course manual and the new 3rd edition of the Principles of Emergency Medical Dispatch reference textbook, a very useful companion to the course manual and essential to the serious, professional EMD.

Participants who complete the 3-day course will be eligible for certification through the NAEMD. To be EMD-certified, the applicant must also be CPR-certified through the American Heart Association, Red Cross, or BLS equivalent. We recommend this training be completed prior to attending the EMD course.

Successful completion of this program entitles the student to a 2-year subscription to the Academy quarterly newsletter.
This certification is valid for 2 years.
Should the student be unsuccessful on the final exam, additional exams are available for a fee of $25.00 per exam.
