Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)

The Program Standards set by Alberta College of Paramedics took effect January 1, 2019. Any program that starts on or after this date must adhere to these new standards.

Our program includes:
- Overall length of 240 hours.
- Required driving components including simulation and in-vehicle drive time (closed track)
- ITLS Basic program
- BLS CPR certification
- Psychological First Aid program
- Patient Engagement, this is some basic clinical time practicing some skills on sick and/or not sick adults.

Complete the full program in as little as about 10 weeks
Mostly in-class instruction, lots of hands on and practice time
High exam success rate - ABOVE NATIONAL AVERAGE!
Student loans and RESP can be attained

Calgary only (Mon/Wed 6-10pm, Fri/Sat 9-5pm, some exceptions)

240 hours


The following are the prerequisite that a student is required to have before being allowed into this course:

  • Class 5 driver's license (GDL okay!)
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR level C
  • English 30-1 or 30-2 or equivalent
  • Math 10C or 20-1 or Math 20 Applied or 20-2 or equivalent
  • Biology 30 or equivalent
  • Proof of Covid-19 Immunizations (now only highly recommended)
  • OR Prior Learning Equivalency - details of experience and additional education will need to be provided along with a copy of high school transcripts.


The AHASTI EMR program is 240 hours. Program classroom dates are primarily in the first 8 weeks then the remainder is available to finish the additional required course components. Students may finish their program in as little as 10 weeks, but have 12 weeks for additional flexible scheduling should it be needed!

Online registration will ask for a credit card, but YOU WILL NOT BE CHARGED ANY FEES AT THIS TIME. This will simply hold your spot while you receive more information about the course and decide if you would like to take the program.

EMR program - $2500 Tuition
Program Fee - $1100
Other equipment and textbooks - $150-$400 (depending on digital/hardcopy text, quality of equipment etc)

Full program for as low as approximately $3800!

Travel - there may be a requirement to travel to other locations within the program city and/or province for parts of the EMR program. Travel and all related expenses will be at the expense of the student and are not included into the course fees. Examples include: Patient Engagement time off site, travel from Red Deer to Calgary for ITLS and/or driving course components, etc.

** Please note you MUST be registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics in order to work as an EMR in the province of Alberta. Please ensure you go to www.abparamedics.com and review the requirements of licensure.

The AHASTI EMR program is approved by the Alberta College of Paramedics at the Emergency Medical Responder level which permits candidates to pursue their practice permit through registration and provincial exam.

This program is licensed through Alberta Advanced Education under the Private Vocational Act. All terms of registration/payment schedules are for this program are regulated by a Student Enrolment Contract.
