The Canadian Red Cross First Aid Instructor Development Program trains and certifies Instructors to organize and deliver the First Aid & CPR courses.

The Instructor Development Program trains Instructors to apply an individualized approach to instructing, which focuses on injury prevention, learning styles and a variety of instructional techniques that consider the abilities, ages and needs of each candidate. Our First Aid & CPR Instructors are trained to encourage each participant's personal rate of achievement, recognizing this will vary from one person to the next.

hdgPrerequisites

The following are the prerequisite that a student is required to have before being allowed into this course:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Proof of a current Standard First Aid with Health Care Provider, from one of the following four national agencies: Canadian Red Cross, Lifesaving Society, Canadian Ski Patrol, or St. John's Ambulance.
  • Please note that EMR, EMT or Paramedic status does not qualify as the pre-requisite.
  • Each candidate will be required to perform all skills taught in a Standard First Aid with HCP CPR without the aid of prompting or materials. Candidates that do not have finely tuned skills, with be removed from the program without a refund of course fees.

The Red Cross First Aid Instructor Program is made up of 2 components:

Didactic Component - 34 hours of classroom instruction provides new instructor candidates with the knowledge and skills necessary to teach Canadian Red Cross First Aid courses. The instructor candidates are expected to have finely tuned first aid and CPR technical skills. Therefore, this course focuses on how to teach and facilitate and not on learning first aid and CPR skills. Each candidate is required to pass a knowledge evaluation with a minimum mark of 80%
• 100% Attendance and participate in this component is required.

Co-Teach with another certified Canadian Red Cross First Aid Instructor - after successfully completing the didactic component, each instructor candidate will be required to complete a Co-Teach of a Canadian Red Cross First Aid & CPR program. The length, type and location of the Co-Teach will be set out by the Instructor Trainer on the last day of the didactic component. The instructor candidate is required to lead a minimum of 50% of the course.

Work Load:
Pre-Course Assignment: will be provided in advance with the course materials and must be handed into the Instructor Trainer at the beginning of the first day.

During the Course: Each candidate will be required to complete take home assignments each day, in preparation for the following day.

After the Course: Lesson planning for co-teach.

hdgCertifications Earned

Upon successful completion of this program you will have earned the following tickets:

  • Instructor Candidates are certified as Canadian Red Cross First Aid Instructors for 3 years and receive a wallet card issued by the Canadian Red Cross.

hdgAdditional Information

Remaining Certified:
The Instructor must teach a minimum of three Canadian Red Cross First Aid courses during the three year period. One of the courses MUST be a full course of either Standard First Aid, Standard CCFA or Marine Advanced First Aid since obtaining the Instructor certification or recertification.

Quality Assurance:
Red Cross may monitor the Instructor’s course at any time.
