The Canadian Red Cross First Aid Instructor Development Program trains and certifies Instructors to organize and deliver the First Aid & CPR courses.

The Instructor Development Program trains Instructors to apply an individualized approach to instructing, which focuses on injury prevention, learning styles and a variety of instructional techniques that consider the abilities, ages and needs of each candidate. Our First Aid & CPR Instructors are trained to encourage each participant's personal rate of achievement, recognizing this will vary from one person to the next.

This course is for candidates that meet any one or more of the following criteria:
- current First Aid Instructor with another agency
- current CPR Instructor with another agency
- current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
- teacher/educator in a school setting
- past Red Cross First Aid Instructor whose certification has been expired more than two years but less than seven.

hdgPrerequisites

The following are the prerequisite that a student is required to have before being allowed into this course:

  • 1. 18 years of age or older
  • 2. Hold a current Standard First Aid with Health Care Provider certification and must be able to independently perform all skills from a Standard First Aid with CPR HCP program without coaching.
  • 3. One of the following:
  • ─ Proof of current First Aid Instructor with another recognized organization
  • ─ Proof of current CPR Instructor certification with another recognized organization
  • ─ Canadian Red Cross First Aid Instructor whose certification has been expired for two years or more, but less than seven years
  • - Proof of current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
  • - Proof Education degree with experience teaching in a school setting

hdgDescription

The Red Cross First Aid Instructor Transfer Program is made up of 2 components:

Self-Study and Classroom Didactic - Self study time plus 16 hours of classroom instruction provides instructor candidates with the knowledge and skills necessary to teach Canadian Red Cross First Aid courses. The instructor candidates are expected to have finely tuned first aid and CPR technical skills. Therefore, this course focuses on how to teach and facilitate and not on learning first aid and CPR skills. Each candidate is required to pass a knowledge evaluation with a minimum mark of 80%
• 100% Attendance and participate in this component is required.

Observation and Co-Teach with another certified Canadian Red Cross First Aid Instructor - after successfully completing the didactic component, each instructor candidate will be required to complete an Observation and Co-Teach of a Canadian Red Cross First Aid & CPR program, leading a minimum of 50% of the course. Instructor Trainers will determine the Co-Teach requirements of each Instructor Candidate. The candidate will have 6 months to complete the co-teach component.

Work Load:
Self-Study Assignment: will be provided in advance with the course materials and must be handed into the Instructor Trainer completed at the beginning of the first day. Each candidate will be required to prepare a presentation that will be pre-assigned upon registration using the materials provided and any other materials brought from home.

Upon successful completion of this program you will have earned the following tickets:

  • Canadian Red Cross First Aid Instructor.
  • Valid for 3 years.
