ITLS Basic Trauma
This two-day course introduces the knowledge and skills required to evaluate and stabilize the trauma patient. ITLS addresses the critical time management of these patients. This is accomplished through instruction and hands-on sessions focusing on rapid assessment and emergency care interventions. The course is designed for two levels of health care practitioners.
Basic level:
Practitioners with current registration as a health care professional including Emergency Medical Responders, Licensed Practical Nurses, Emergency Medical Technicians, and military levels QL3-5.
Content

- • Chest Trauma & Abdominal Trauma
- • Airway Management
- • Patient Assessment
- • Spinal & Extremity Trauma
- • Burns Lecture
- • Spinal immobilization & rapid extrication
- • Helmet removal & traction splints
- • Patient assessment (integrated rapid and detailed survey)
- • Fluid resuscitation
- • Chest decompression
- • Mandatory stations for Advanced Providers
- • Optional Scenario Practice for Basic Providers
- Day Two
- • Trauma in the Elderly
- • Trauma in the Pediatric and Pregnant Patient
- • Head Trauma
- • Shock
- • Current Trends in Trauma Care
- 1245 – 1345 Scenario Practice
- Evaluation Stations
- 1345 – 1700 Written and Practical Evaluations

Prerequisites
The following are the prerequisite that a student is required to have before being allowed into this course:
- 1. Health Care Provider - Level C CPR current within the last year
- 2. Current registration as a health care professional (EMR/EMT/LPN/Military QL3-5)
Description
The ITLS Course is to prepare emergency health care providers to knowledgeably and skillfully perform the rapid assessment, resuscitation, packaging, stabilization and transport of the trauma patient. The course includes lectures and interactive skill stations to provide for the application and integration of knowledge and skills to case based scenarios. Prior study of the text is required.
